The Complete TOPIK Guide

TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) is the most widely taken official Korean language exam for foreigners pursuing study, employment, permanent residency, or naturalization in Korea. As of 2025, it’s administered in over 87 countries, with more than 550,000 annual test-takers worldwide — making it an internationally recognized credential.
1. What Is TOPIK?
TOPIK은 국립국제교육원이 주관하고, 크게 TOPIK I(초급, 1~2급)과 TOPIK II(중·고급, 3~6급)로 나뉘어요.
TOPIK is administered by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED), and is divided into TOPIK I (beginner, Levels 1–2) and TOPIK II (intermediate–advanced, Levels 3–6).
시험은 한국에서 1월, 4월, 5월, 7월, 10월, 11월에 연 6회 시행되고, 국외 시험은 국가별로 일정이 다르니 미리 확인해야 해요.
In Korea, it’s held six times a year — January, April, May, July, October, and November. Overseas test schedules vary by country, so checking in advance is essential.
2. Registration Process
공식 접수는 topik.go.kr에서 진행하고, 처음 응시한다면 회원가입부터 해야 해요. 아이디·비밀번호, 한글·영문 이름, 생년월일, 성별, 국적, 주소, 이메일, 전화번호를 입력하고, 6개월 이내 촬영한 흰 배경 사진을 미리 등록해두는 게 좋아요.
Official registration happens at topik.go.kr, and first-time applicants need to sign up as a member — entering your ID/password, Korean and English name, date of birth, gender, nationality, address, email, and phone number, and it’s a good idea to pre-register a white-background photo taken within the last 6 months.

Once you’ve selected a test site, your English name, date of birth, and gender can’t be changed — double-check everything before submitting.
접수 절차는 로그인 → 시험 및 급수 선택(TOPIK I/II) → 지원자 정보 입력 → 시험장 선택 → 사진 등록 → 응시 동기 등 추가 정보 입력 → 결제 → 접수 확인 순서로 진행돼요.
The registration flow goes: log in → choose the exam and level (TOPIK I/II) → enter applicant info → select a test site → register your photo → fill in additional info like your reason for applying → pay → confirm registration.
3. Exam Formats and Fees (2026, Verified)
PBT(지필시험, 가장 많은 인원이 응시)는 TOPIK I이 40,000원, TOPIK II가 55,000원이에요. IBT(인터넷 기반 시험)는 TOPIK I이 70,000원, TOPIK II가 95,000원으로 더 비싸요.
For PBT (paper-based test, taken by the largest number of applicants), TOPIK I costs 40,000 KRW and TOPIK II costs 55,000 KRW. IBT (internet-based test) is more expensive — 70,000 KRW for TOPIK I and 95,000 KRW for TOPIK II.
2022년부터는 말하기 평가도 별도로 신설됐어요. IBT 방식으로 진행되고 30분간 6문항을 풀며, 응시료는 80,000원이에요. 다만 2026년 기준으로 TOPIK 말하기 성적은 비자나 사회통합프로그램(KIIP)에 반영되지 않으니 참고하세요.
Since 2022, a separate Speaking test has also existed. It’s IBT-based, 30 minutes long with 6 questions, and costs 80,000 KRW. As of 2026, though, TOPIK Speaking scores aren’t factored into visa points or the Social Integration Program (KIIP) — worth keeping in mind.
💡 IBT는 쓰기 답안을 키보드로 작성해야 해서 한글 타자에 익숙하지 않다면 PBT를 선택하는 게 유리해요.
Since IBT requires typing your writing answers on a keyboard, PBT may be the better choice if you’re not yet comfortable with Korean typing.
4. Exam Structure
TOPIK I(초급)은 총 100분, 200점 만점이에요. 듣기 30문항(40분, 100점)과 읽기 40문항(60분, 100점)으로 구성되고, 80점 이상이면 1급, 140점 이상이면 2급이에요. 80점 미만은 급수가 나오지 않아요.
TOPIK I (beginner) runs 100 minutes total, out of 200 points. It has 30 listening questions (40 min, 100 points) and 40 reading questions (60 min, 100 points). 80+ points earns Level 1, 140+ earns Level 2. Below 80, no certificate is issued.
TOPIK II(중·고급)는 총 180분, 300점 만점이에요. 듣기 50문항(60분, 100점), 쓰기 4문항(50분, 100점), 읽기 50문항(70분, 100점) 순서로 진행돼요. 120점 이상 3급, 150점 이상 4급, 190점 이상 5급, 230점 이상 6급이고, 120점 미만은 급수가 나오지 않아요.
TOPIK II (intermediate–advanced) runs 180 minutes total, out of 300 points, in the order of Listening (50 questions, 60 min, 100 points), Writing (4 questions, 50 min, 100 points), and Reading (50 questions, 70 min, 100 points). 120+ points earns Level 3, 150+ Level 4, 190+ Level 5, and 230+ Level 6. Below 120, no certificate is issued.
5. What Each Level Actually Means
대학 진학이 목표라면 최소 TOPIK 4급을 목표로 하고, 경쟁이 치열한 대학이나 인기 학과는 5~6급을 목표로 하는 게 안전해요.
If your goal is university admission, aim for at least TOPIK Level 4 — and for competitive universities or popular majors, targeting Level 5–6 is safer.
F-2-7(점수제 거주) 비자를 준비 중이라면 TOPIK II 필기 급수가 점수로 반영돼요: 1급 3점, 2급 5점, 3급 10점, 4급 15점, 5~6급 20점이에요. 다만 TOPIK 말하기 평가는 이 점수표에 포함되지 않으니, 비자 목적이라면 반드시 필기시험 급수를 취득해야 해요.
If you’re working toward an F-2-7 (points-based residence) visa, your TOPIK II written level counts toward your points: Level 1 = 3 points, Level 2 = 5, Level 3 = 10, Level 4 = 15, and Levels 5–6 = 20 points. Note that TOPIK Speaking scores aren’t part of this points table — if your goal is visa-related, you need the written exam level specifically.
6. Study Strategy by Target Level
1~2급 목표(TOPIK I): 초급 교재 1~2권으로 기초 어휘·문법을 정리하고, 매일 짧은 듣기 1세트, 이메일·공지사항 같은 짧은 글 읽기를 반복하세요. 매주 1회는 시간을 재고 모의고사를 풀어보세요.
Targeting Levels 1–2 (TOPIK I): Work through 1–2 beginner textbooks to build core vocabulary and grammar, practice one short listening set daily, and repeatedly read short texts like emails and notices. Take a timed practice test once a week.
3~4급 목표(TOPIK II 기초): 연결 표현, 피동·사동, 간접화법 같은 중급 문법을 확장하고, 1~2분짜리 뉴스 요약이나 강의 도입부로 듣기 실력을 키우세요. 쓰기는 짧은 문장에서 시작해 200~300자 작문까지 늘려가세요.
Targeting Levels 3–4 (TOPIK II basics): Expand into intermediate grammar — connective expressions, passive/causative forms, indirect speech — and build listening skills with 1–2 minute news summaries or lecture intros. For writing, start with short sentences and work up to 200–300 character essays.
5~6급 목표(TOPIK II 고급): 논리적 연결, 추론, 가정, 양보 같은 고급 표현을 정리하고, 강의·토론·뉴스를 통째로 듣고 핵심 주장과 화자 태도를 파악하는 연습을 하세요. 쓰기는 서론-본론-결론 구조의 600~700자 작문, 그래프·표 설명, 의견 제시까지 연습하세요.
Targeting Levels 5–6 (TOPIK II advanced): Master advanced expressions for logical connection, inference, hypotheticals, and concession, and practice fully following lectures, debates, and news to identify the main argument and speaker’s attitude. For writing, practice 600–700 character essays with an intro-body-conclusion structure, plus explaining graphs/tables and presenting opinions.
7. Section-by-Section Scoring Strategy
듣기: 지문을 미리 읽지 말고 소리에만 집중하세요. 숫자, 시간, 장소, 이유, 전환 표현(“하지만”, “그런데”) 같은 키워드를 잡아내는 연습을 하고, 틀린 문제는 유형별로 오답노트에 정리하세요.
Listening: Don’t pre-read the text — focus purely on the audio. Practice catching keywords like numbers, times, places, reasons, and transition words (“하지만,” “그런데”), and keep an error log organized by mistake type.
읽기: 문장을 끝까지 읽어서 부정문·조건문을 놓치지 마세요. 주제문은 첫 문장이나 마지막 문장에 있는 경우가 많아요. TOPIK I은 문항당 1.5분 이내, TOPIK II는 1.2~1.4분 이내로 시간을 배분하세요.
Reading: Read sentences all the way through so you don’t miss negations or conditionals. The topic sentence is often at the beginning or end. Budget under 1.5 minutes per question for TOPIK I, and 1.2–1.4 minutes for TOPIK II.
쓰기(TOPIK II만 해당): 짧은 문장형 문제(1·2번)는 문법 오류를 최소화하는 데 집중하세요. 200~300자 작문(3번)은 서론-이유 2개와 예시-결론 구조로, 600~700자 작문(4번)은 문제 제기-원인 2개(각각 예시 포함)-대안이나 의견-종합 구조로 연습하세요.
Writing (TOPIK II only): For the short-sentence questions (1–2), focus on minimizing grammar errors. For the 200–300 character essay (Q3), practice an intro–two reasons with examples–conclusion structure. For the 600–700 character essay (Q4), practice a problem statement–two causes with examples–alternative or opinion–synthesis structure.
8. What to Bring on Exam Day
신분증(여권 또는 외국인등록증), 수험표, 검정 볼펜(쓰기용), 아날로그 시계(스마트워치는 금지), 물과 간단한 간식을 챙기세요.
Bring your ID (passport or Alien Registration Card), exam ticket, a black pen (for writing), an analog watch (smartwatches are prohibited), water, and a small snack.
9. Checking and Using Your Score
성적은 시험일로부터 약 1개월 후 발표되고, 홈페이지에서 성적표를 조회·인쇄할 수 있어요. 대학·대학원 입학, 장학금 신청, 취업, 비자·영주권 가산점까지 다양하게 활용돼요.
Scores are announced about a month after the exam, and you can view/print your score report on the website. Uses range widely — university and graduate school admission, scholarship applications, employment, and visa/permanent residency points.
