Staying Radiant: Embracing My Skin at 50

At nearly 50, I’ve noticed that my skin doesn’t “bounce back” quite as quickly as it used to. Lately, I’ve been struck by how long the mask marks linger on my face—a gentle but clear reminder that my skin’s elasticity is changing.

Rather than viewing these lines as signs of defeat, I’ve decided to treat them as an invitation to be kinder to myself. Here is the routine I’ve adopted to keep my skin healthy and glowing, even when time feels like it’s moving faster than ever.

Most Korean women take skincare very seriously. It’s a standard daily ritual to protect our skin thoroughly from UV rays and apply a polished look before heading out. Just as importantly, the moment we get home, we cleanse our skin immediately and focus on deep hydration, ensuring our skin gets the care it needs to recover.

1. Sun Protection: My Daily Non-Negotiable

I’ve realized that UV rays are the ultimate silent ager. Even on days when I’m indoors, I make sunscreen an essential part of my morning routine, just like brushing my teeth. It’s not just about avoiding sunburn; it’s about protecting the collagen that keeps my skin firm. I’ve learned to apply it generously—think of a coin-sized amount—and I layer it throughout the day for better coverage. Remember, protecting your skin today is the greatest gift you can give your future self.

2. The Art of After-Cleansing

The most important part of my day isn’t just the morning ritual, but how I treat my skin after the sun goes down. Since sunscreen is designed to stay on, I use a gentle cleansing oil or balm to melt it away thoroughly.

Once my face is clean, I don’t just “wipe” it with a toner. Instead, I gently press a hydrating toner into my skin with my palms. Following this, I look for products packed with ceramides, panthenol, and hyaluronic acid to fortify my skin barrier. If my skin feels particularly dry, I finish with a single drop of facial oil—it acts like a protective seal that locks in all that hard-won moisture.

3. Vaeline

“Many people are hesitant to use Vaseline because of its thick, occlusive texture. However, I have a simple trick that changed everything for me. Instead of towel-drying your face completely after washing, apply your moisturizer while your skin is still damp.

Then, take a small amount of Vaseline and mix it with a drop of water in the palm of your hand. Rub your palms together to emulsify it—this makes the texture much softer and easier to spread. Gently press your warm palms into your skin. This technique seals in the hydration perfectly without feeling heavy, ensuring you wake up to plump, glowing skin every single morning.”

While Vaseline is well-known for being gentle and is often used even on sensitive or atopic skin, everyone’s skin reacts differently. If you have particularly sensitive skin, I highly recommend performing a small patch test before applying it to your entire face to ensure it works well for you

4. Loving the Process

Aging is an inevitable journey, but it doesn’t mean we have to stop taking care of ourselves. For me, these small, consistent habits are a form of self-love. Whether it’s that extra minute to pat in a serum or the ritual of applying sunscreen, I am learning to appreciate the skin I’m in.
