Dialogue: Persuading the Mother-in-Law

결혼을 앞둔 커플인데,
There is a couple who are about to get married,

시어머니가 명품백을 사준다고 한 거야.
and the mother-in-law said she’d buy a luxury bag.

금액은 이 정도 선에서 사주겠다.
Within this price range, she said.

원하는 백을 사고 싶은데 그건 너무 비싼 거지.
She wants to buy the bag she really wants, but that one is too expensive.

그 남편한테 내가 돈을 좀 더 보태서 내가 갖고 싶은 백을 사고 싶다.
So she told her husband, “I’ll add some of my own money and buy the bag I actually want.”

그냥 사주시는 거 금액 선에서 받아라.
(Her husband said,) “Just take it within the price range she suggested.”

그러니까 이제 서운해가지고, 바로 어머니한테 얘기할 수 있을 것 같은데.
So she felt hurt, and figured she could just talk to her mother-in-law directly.

아예 PPT 장표를 만드는 거야.
So she made an entire PPT slide.

컨퍼런스 룸 빌려가지고.
She rented a conference room.

자 어머니, 제가 Top 5를 골라봤고요.
“Mom, I picked out a Top 5 list.”

얘는 제가 너무 갖고 싶은 드림백인데.
“This one is my dream bag that I really want.”

제 돈 보태서 1번 가방을 사고 싶다.
“I want to buy bag number 1 by adding my own money.”

어머니 70%, 저 30%로 만든 콜라보레이션!
“A collaboration made of 70% Mom, 30% me!”

하지만 저는 밖에 나갔을 때 “웬 가방이야” 하면,
“But when I go outside and people ask, ‘What’s that bag?'”

우리 어머니가 선물해 주셨어 라고 답할 겁니다.
“I’ll answer, ‘My mother-in-law gave it to me.'”

완전 넘어가 지금.
(She’s) totally going to fall for this.

어머니가 주신 선물로 제가 평생 생각하겠습니다.
“I’ll think of it as your gift for the rest of my life.”

잘 부탁드립니다.
“Please consider it.”

1번 가자.
“Let’s go with number 1.”

1번, 탁월한 선택이십니다.
“Number 1 — that’s an excellent choice.”

Grammar & Vocabulary Notes

The Verb “고르다” (To Choose/Pick)

‘고르다’는 알아두면 아주 유용한 동사인데, / 활용이 좀 까다로워.
“고르다” is a helpful verb to know — but its conjugation can be tricky.

기본형: 고르다
Base form: 고르다

과거형: 골랐다 — ‘으’가 어디로 갔는지 궁금하지? / ‘르’ 불규칙 동사라서 ‘으’가 탈락하고 ‘ㄹㄹ’로 바뀌는 거야.
Past tense: 골랐다 — Wait, where did the ‘으’ go? / This is a “르” irregular verb, so the ‘으’ drops and doubles into ‘ㄹㄹ.’

골라봤어요: “시도해서 골라봤다”는 뜻으로, / ‘-아/어 보다'(~해 보다)가 붙은 형태야.
골라봤어요: “I’ve tried choosing…” — this uses “-아/어 보다,” meaning “to try doing something.”

골라보다 + -고요 = 골라봤고요 (다른 사람에게 과정이나 목록을 설명할 때 써.)
골라보다 + -고요 = 골라봤고요 (Used when explaining a list or a process to someone else.)

Using “Number + 번”

한국어에서는 숫자 뒤에 그냥 ‘번’을 붙이면 / 순서나 순위를 나타낼 수 있어. / “1번”, “2번”처럼 아주 간단하게 쓸 수 있어!
In Korean, you can simply add “-번” after a number to indicate rank or order — / a quick and easy way to say “Number 1,” “Number 2,” and so on.

Percent or 프로?

한국어에서는 “퍼센트”랑 “프로” 둘 다 들을 수 있어.
In Korean, you’ll hear both “퍼센트” and “프로” for percentages.

프로: 친구나 가족이랑 말할 때 훨씬 자연스럽게 들리는 캐주얼한 표현 (예: “70% → 칠십 프로”).
프로: Very common in casual, spoken Korean — sounds more natural with friends or family (e.g., “70% → 칠십 프로”).

퍼센트: 더 공식적인 자리, 뉴스, 발표 등에서 쓰는 표현.
